SASMT offers several bursary programs to support music students pursuing their studies in South Africa. Here are the details of each bursary program:
- David Reunert Bursary:
- Award Value: R1,500
- Intended for music students who plan to teach or perform music professionally.
- Eligibility:
- South African citizen
- Aged between 18 and 25
- Matric certificate or equivalent
- Student of current and paid-up members of the SASMT
- Ellie Marx Memorial Scholarship:
- Award Value: R5,000
- Intended for students studying stringed instruments, with a focus on the violin.
- Eligibility:
- South African citizen
- Matric certificate or equivalent
- May study locally or internationally
- Student of current and paid-up members of the SASMT
- Gladwell Scholarship:
- Award Value: R12,000 (payable in two installments)
- Intended for music students who plan to study music (instrumental, composition, or vocal) locally or internationally.
- Eligibility:
- South African citizen
- Intends to study music locally or internationally, at an institution or teacher approved by the SASMT Council
- Minimum grade 8 standard of music examining bodies
- Under 25 years of age
- Student of current and paid-up members of the SASMT
- Kathleen Irish Scholarship:
- Award Value: R12,000 (payable in two installments)
- Intended for talented music students with financial need who plan to study piano at the tertiary level.
- Eligibility:
- Intends to study music locally or internationally, at an institution or teacher approved by the SASMT Council
- Student of current and paid-up members of the SASMT
- Proven financial need

CHEFFING & COOKING BURSARIES FOR 2024
Cheffing is the activity of working as a professional chef- a chef is someone who is a trained professional in the culinary (cooking) industry. Chefs often focus primarily on one type of cuisine and are responsible for being proficient in all aspects of food preparation. Chefs are essential to society and particularly the hospitality industry because they not only manage the kitchen, but are responsible for the planning of menus, preparing dishes, developing recipes, supervising junior cooks and kitchen workers, ordering supplies for the kitchen, and maintaining the cleanliness of the kitchen. Chefs are essential for the hospitality and restaurant industry as they ensure that the guests have an exceptional experience by providing top-quality food.
To become a chef, it would be ideal for you to take Hospitality Studies, Consumer Science, and Physical Science as subjects in school. To become an Executive Chef, you would need at least 7 years of experience within the industry and/or a Bachelor’s Degree in Culinary Arts or Hospitality. You could also partake in apprenticeship roles and work your way up in the industry, gaining hands-on experience and thus, become a professional chef. Different career paths in the Cheffing industry are an Executive Chef, Sous Chef, Personal Chef, and Private Household Chef.
