Background & Job Description
The South African Department of Basic Education (DBE), in collaboration with SAYouth.mobi, is opening applications for the 2025 Teacher Assistant program. This initiative offers unemployed youth a paid opportunity to support teachers and learners in public schools across the country. It is part of the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention aimed at building future skills and easing youth unemployment.
From 22 April to 9 May 2025, interested candidates can apply via SAYouth.mobi to become part of the school ecosystem while gaining real-world experience that enhances future employability.
Tasks
Successful applicants will assist schools in the following ways:
- Classroom Support: Help teachers with lesson preparation, student assistance, and educational content delivery.
- Student Engagement: Provide one-on-one support and guidance to learners.
- Cleanliness & Order: Assist with maintaining a tidy and conducive learning environment.
- Extracurricular Support: Aid in organizing after-school programs like sports, arts, and reading clubs.

Qualifications
Education and Certification
- A matric certificate is beneficial but not mandatory.
- Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) may be required for shortlisted candidates.
Experience
- No previous work experience is required, but prior volunteer work or involvement in community projects is an advantage.

Eligibility Requirements:
- South African citizen aged 18–34 (must not turn 35 before March 2026).
- Residing within 5 km of a school, or 30 km in rural areas.
- Not currently in school, training, or employed.
- Must have a bank account in your name.
Monthly Stipend: R4,000
Contract Duration: 2 June 2025 – 30 November 2025
