University of the Wits Corporate Student Sponsorship and Support

University of the Wits Corporate Student Sponsorship and Support

Wits University offers corporates the opportunity to contribute to infrastructure, academic and student support through donations and sponsorships. Read more about the benefits of supporting Wits.
Donating Bursaries and Scholarships
Donations are tax deductible, philanthropic contributions to the development of the national skills pool. Companies can donate to a student support fund to assist academically performing students in financial need or may establish prestigious, endowed scholarships that ensure ongoing development of particular skills, for example, industry related skills, into the future.
To find out more about donating to the Student Support Funds, click here. To learn more about Prestigious Scholarships, click here.
Sponsoring the HR Talent Pipeline
Sponsorships are contributions that allow companies to derive commercial benefit (marketing, skills, B-BBEE and tax) while contributing to developing their own, or the national, skills pool.
Companies can sponsor students for:

  • the company’s HR talent pipeline (future employment agreement with the student)
  • academically performing students in financial need (no future employment agreement)

Visit the Corporate Support Portal below to advertise student funding opportunities and graduate recruitment schemes. You can include links to your company website and tailor the application processes to ensure only matching students apply.
Wits publicises all talent opportunities to the Wits student body through various channels including Wits social media.
Corporates: to advertise your sponsored bursaries and scholarships click Corporate Talent Portal
Students: to search for bursaries and scholarships click Search for Bursaries & Scholarships
Important Corporate Student Support Considerations:

  • For donations, the relevant Wits department will shortlist candidates, and the donor will select the beneficiaries for non-discretionary scholarships such as the Prestigious Scholarships.
  • Wits will distribute donations to the discretionary Student Support Funds to where the funding is most needed.
  • Where contributions are bona fide donations, donors may not request refunds from students that perform poorly in a particular year of study.
  • For sponsorships, agreements are signed between the sponsor and the student beneficiary, and between the University and the sponsor.

University of the Wits Prestigious Scholarships

University of the Wits Prestigious Scholarships

Prestigious Scholarships are the most significant, restricted awards on offer to Wits students.
The donor, in collaboration with Wits, may design the award to meet the criteria for named scholarships and donor recognition as set out in the relevant Wits policies and guidelines.
Criteria include, for example, field of study, demographic and financial profile of beneficiary, monetary value of the scholarship, duration of the scholarship, and the option of establishing an endowment or donating through annual contributions.

University of the Wits SRC Humanitarian Fund

University of the Wits SRC Humanitarian Fund

Only about 10% of the Wits student population are NSFAS beneficiaries. The “missing middle” are the many students who fall just above the NSFAS threshold but are still unable to afford university fees.

They are those with a household income ranging from about R120 000 per annum to approximately R400 000 per annum.

This has led to the SRC of 2015/2016 launching the #Access campaign. The target is to raise R10 million to assist the “missing middle”.

BANKSETA Bursaries

BANKSETA Bursaries

BANKSETA employs a multipronged approach on Work Integrated Learning and providing funding for bursaries. It currently engages with public institutions of learning to build capacity, thereby promoting access and reach. Each of the strategic relationships built with the public TVET colleges, Universities and Universities of Technology is designed in such a manner to either:-

  1. Improve how the institution responds to the needs of the broader banking and inclusive banking sector, through lecturer support; or
  2. Develop scarce and critical skills for occupations that are in short supply by the sector, through bursary support; and
  3. Bring demand (industry/ employers) for skills closer to supply (current workers / new entrants into the economy) of skills by address better use of work-based skills development.

WIL GRANT FUNDING
BANKSETA approves TVET colleges on an annual basis for Work Integrated Learning (WIL) grant funding, the aim of which is to assist the colleges to make links with employers in order for the learners to obtain the requisite workplace experience to make them more employable. BANKSETA manages the relationships between colleges and the sector employers by inviting the sector employers to various regional networking sessions, where employers are taken through the aims and objectives of the intervention, processes on how to become involved as well as meet the respective college contacts.
The college contacts are provided for those employers who wish to make contact now:
