This competition rewards a student in each of the four categories: Classical Instrumental, Classical Vocal,
Jazz and African Music. The Trust was established by the Rolf-Stephan Nussbaum Foundation for the
purpose of providing scholarships, bursaries or awards for students studying for a
performance diploma or degree in music.
Fine Music Radio (FMR) is a unique radio station based in South Africa. It is known for broadcasting from the Artscape Theatre Complex, a cultural center, making it the only station to do so. FMR is dedicated to providing a high-quality listening experience and focuses on classical and jazz music. The station offers a blend of classical and jazz music, along with outside broadcasts, informative content, and social activities.
Fine Music Radio (FMR) Bursary 2024-2025
The Fine Music Radio (FMR) Bursary, in collaboration with the Rolf-Stephan Nussbaum Foundation, aims to support students pursuing higher qualifications in music and performance arts. The bursary is available to students interested in studying Music degrees or Diplomas in performance.
The bursary covers several categories, including African Music, Jazz Vocal/Instrumental, Classical Vocal, and Classical Instrumental.
FMR Bursary Competition – Rules & Regulations
I – Application:
The competition has two rounds: a preliminary round through a pre-recorded audition video and a final round held in the Baxter Concert Hall in May 2024-2025.
The competition is open to South African residents currently registered at a tertiary institution. Applicants must provide proof of academic registration and South African ID along with a signed reference letter from a teacher.
The competition consists of four categories:
- Classical Voice
- Classical Instrumental
- Jazz Vocal/Instrumental
- African Music
The closing date for applications is March 31.
II – Preliminary Round:
Preliminary round performances must be submitted as pre-recorded videos uploaded to YouTube as unlisted. The link should be included in the application.
A maximum of three applicants from each category will be chosen for the final round.
III – Final Round:
The final rounds will be held in the Baxter Concert Hall in May 2024-2025.
Classical Category: May 10, 6:30 pm Jazz/African Categories: May 13, 6:30 pm
Competitors acknowledge that the FMR Bursary Trust Competition may record and use performances at their discretion. The final round will be broadcast on Fine Music Radio, and competitors will receive a copy of the broadcast for non-commercial use.
IV – Adjudication:
Adjudication decisions are final, and no appeal will be considered. Adjudication criteria include general presentation, balanced program compilation, and specific criteria for each category.
V – Repertoire:
Competitors must present a program of up to 15 minutes, including at least two contrasting pieces. Repertoire requirements vary by category.
VI – Video Submission Requirements:
Preliminary rounds are conducted via pre-recorded video submissions on YouTube. Specific video submission guidelines must be followed.
Eligibility Criteria For The Bursary
Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible for the bursary program:
- South African citizenship with proper residence proof.
- Living in South Africa.
- Enrollment in an accredited and recognized tertiary educational institution in South Africa.
